Solvent-Soluble

Solvent-Soluble Azo Initatiors free radical sources offer a number of advantages over organic peroxides.

• More stable than most peroxides, so can be stored under milder conditions and are not shock-sensitive.
• Decompose with first-order kinetics; not sensitive to metals, acids, and bases; not susceptible to radical-induced decompositions. This makes Azo Initatiors free radical sources more efficient and predictable than other free radical sources.
• Produce less energetic radicals than peroxides, so there is less branching and cross-linking.
• Produce linear chains which provide better control of polymerisation
• No oxygenated or hydrogenated residues: slower ageing of polymers, stability of pigmented or dyed polymer systems.
• Are weak oxidizing agents, which lets them be used to polymerize unsaturated amines, mercaptans, and aldehydes without affecting pigments and dyes.
• Offer an implementation temperature of 45 to 100° C, a primary criterion in controlling polymerisation reactions
• Are available in various grades to use over a wide temperature range.

Use as Blowing Agent : Azo Initatiors free radical sources are used as blowing agents by taking advantage of the nitrogen evolved during decomposition. However, organic by-products are released in addition to the nitrogen.

Polymerization Uses : Azo Initatiors free radical sources are used to produce polymers and copolymers through bulk, solution, suspension, and (to a lesser extent) emulsion polymerizations. Common acrylic and vinyl monomers polymerized with Azo Initatiors include: * Vinyl Chloride * Acrylonitrile *Acrylic Acid *Acrylamide *Styrene * Ethylene * Vinyl Acetate *Vinylidene Chloride * Methyl Methacrylate *Methyl Acrylate *Unsaturated Polyesters

Nonpolymerization Uses : Azo Initatiors free radical sources initiate the addition of compounds such as chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, thiols, and phosphines across double bonds.
Azo Initatiors reacts with unsaturated compounds in equimolar amounts to give monomers and oligomers, which contain two Azo Initatiors-derived groups. These dinitriles can be further converted to amides, amines, or acids.
It is also used as a catalyst for free radical halogenation, sulphochlorination, addition of phosphorus applied for the manufacture of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and solvent extraction reagents. Azo Initatiors free radical sources initiate halogenations as well as the air oxidation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, and vinyl acetate.
